Sciatica

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a type of nerve pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve—the largest nerve in the body. This nerve runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks, down the back of each leg. When it's pinched or inflamed, it can cause sharp, shooting, or burning pain that travels down one side of the lower body—sometimes all the way to the foot.

Sciatica isn’t a diagnosis on its own—it’s a symptom of an underlying issue. The most common cause is a herniated disc, but it can also result from spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine), disc degeneration, or even muscle tightness (like piriformis syndrome).

Typical Symptoms Include:

  • Pain radiating from the lower back into the buttock, hamstring, or calf

  • Tingling or numbness in the leg or foot

  • Muscle weakness or difficulty standing for long

  • Pain that worsens with sitting, coughing, or bending forward

For some, sciatica flares up suddenly and resolves in weeks. For others, it becomes a long-term issue that affects mobility, sleep, and overall quality of life.

At Reform Clinic, we take sciatica seriously—and individually. Whether it’s caused by a disc issue, muscle imbalance, or postural stress, we develop a targeted plan to relieve nerve irritation, reduce pain, and restore healthy movement. This may include nerve gliding techniques, spinal mobilisation, hands-on therapy, strengthening and stretching, posture correction, and lifestyle coaching.

The aim isn’t just symptom relief—it’s to treat the root cause, build resilience, and help you move freely and confidently again.
