Spinal Disc Injuries

What Are Spinal Disc Injuries?

Spinal disc injuries occur when one of the discs that sit between the bones of your spine (the vertebrae) becomes damaged, irritated, or displaced. These discs act like shock absorbers—they’re soft, cushion-like structures with a tough outer layer and a jelly-like centre. When they’re healthy, they help your spine move smoothly and protect it from strain.

But when a disc is injured—through sudden impact, repetitive stress, poor posture, or even age-related wear and tear—it can bulge, tear, or herniate (sometimes called a “slipped” or “ruptured” disc). This can cause pain in the back or neck, and in many cases, radiating pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs due to pressure on nearby nerves.

Common Types Of Spinal Disc Injuries Include:

  • Disc bulge – where the disc extends beyond its usual boundary without rupturing.

  • Disc herniation – when the inner gel leaks out, potentially irritating or compressing a spinal nerve.

  • Degenerative disc disease – a condition where discs lose hydration and flexibility over time, making them more prone to injury.

Disc injuries can range from mildly irritating to severely limiting—but the good news is, most don’t require surgery. With the right care, your body can heal, adapt, and regain strength.

At Reform Clinic, we take a personalised approach to disc-related issues. After a thorough assessment, we build a treatment plan that may include tailored rehab exercises, manual therapy, pain education, and movement retraining. We also address the underlying factors—like posture, stress, and core stability—that may be contributing to ongoing strain or inflammation.

Our goal is to help you reduce pain, protect the spine, and return to the activities you love—with confidence.
